Direct Connection for R6 (Rainbow Six)
  • This method is not guaranteed to work; it’s written based on my personal experience
  • This method can’t fully replace an accelerator; it just offers a way to save money (no accelerator needed)

This method merely offers a way to connect to the servers and play Rainbow Six without an accelerator; in practice it doesn’t perform better than an accelerator. Connecting to the server and loading the match list when you open the game takes 2–3 minutes, and after each match you wait about a minute to get back to the main page

But not using an accelerator means saving money, and I love free stuff

I just reinstalled my system last week and found that after accelerating, Rainbow Six voice chat didn’t work (Tencent Accelerator). But last week I had VIP and the game was still playable, so I left it alone. This week the accelerator expired, so I had to try fixing the NAT type and take a gamble on whether I could connect directly.

Speaking of which, the Tencent Accelerator is truly disgusting — its acceleration is on par with third-rate accelerators, and they still push VIP and SVIP tiers..

Side note: Ubisoft’s customer service is truly something. Last Sunday night they told me my account was permanently banned for misconduct. I filed a ticket on Monday, got no reply by Wednesday, filed another one on Wednesday, and it wasn’t resolved until Friday. In the end they said, “For technical reasons, your account was banned by mistake.” I worried about it at school for a whole week…

Press WIN+I to open Settings, go to Gaming -> Xbox Network, wait for the spinner to finish, then check the Xbox Live Multiplayer section. If your NAT type is Open, press CTRL+W — this blog post is useless for you.

My ISP is China Mobile. I got it because the broadband was cheap, but it turns out it’s far worse than my classmates’ China Telecom for gaming. Mobile wraps your home router in another large LAN layer at the community (or city) level, so it’s called “a wall within a wall” ~~2333~, which makes it hard for games to connect to servers abroad.

First, click the Repair button at the bottom of Xbox Live Multiplayer, then reboot and re-check whether the NAT type has become Open. If that solves it, great.

Manually enabling Teredo#

If it can’t be fixed (and in fact most people can’t fix it with the simple repair button), you need to manually enable Teredo.

Open PowerShell or cmd and enter:

Terminal window
netsh interface Teredo set state servername=default
netsh interface Teredo set state type=natawareclient

// Some people online say natawareclient is better suited for home use than enterpriseclient; if natawareclient doesn’t work, try enterpriseclient.

Reboot the computer and check the NAT type again

For me, this already solved it, and even the Rainbow Six voice chat worked (surprise).
